Smell and Taste Triggers
Although not as common as auditory or visual triggers, some misophonia sufferers find themselves sensitive to the same trigger reactions when exposed to certain smells and tastes. Two of the most common smell triggers are fragrances (colognes, perfumes, soaps, cleansers) and cigarrette/cigar smoke. I have also received comments from other misophonia sufferers who said that the tastes/smells of coffee, mint, aerosol deodorant, public bathrooms, apple juice, lemonade, a turkey cooking, air fresheners, bubble gum, and even bad breath triggers them too.
For me, certain strong tastes annoy me (like raw yellow/red onions) especially when I'm not expecting them. For example: When I go to a bagel place and the person who prepared a cinnamon raisin bagel before me didn't wipe the knife after he prepared the previous person's sandwich; so I taste the strong, acidic taste of the onion lingering on top of the sweet cinnamon raisin bagel. (Yuck!) I am also triggered by certain soaps (there is one that smells like Ivory soap on steroids), but my biggest smell trigger by far is the smell of cigarettes. A person doesn't have to be actively smoking them, if I can smell cigarette smoke on a person's clothes or hair, it will trigger me big time. It's strange though... When I was much younger, I could somewhat tolerate the smell but now I am so hypersentitive to it, I've been able to smell someone smoking from over a hundred feet across to the other side of a room!
