The "Butterfly's Whisper" Blog

Welcome to my blog. I hope by sharing my own misophonia experiences, others who are frustrated with misophonia sensitivities will discover that they're not alone. I also hope that people who may not have misophonia will gain some insight about what it's like to have this condition.

Where does the time fly?!?!?

What a week... or should I say, (given how long it's been since my last post), what a couple of weeks!!!

I can't believe we're less than five days away from September. Where has the time flown? I've been keeping so busy running my new office but despite the new responsibilities, I'm happy I made the move. Yes, I still have to deal with misophonia annoyances, but I've come to accept that it's just a fact of life for me. One time this week I snapped at one person standing at the bank teller next to me because he was drumming his hands so fast and loud, I thought my head would explode.

Despite having a quasi-long commute (I deliberately did NOT live in the city for fear of potential misophonia triggers), it's been wonderful having a quiet retreat away from the office to decompress. Being able to have a minimal trigger environment outside of work has been a godsend - especially when I'm in a small office with a coworker who loves crunching potato chips from a HUGE crinkly bag, crispy apples, muttering under her breath... And of course, she gets annoyed at me if I wear earbuds to focus on my work because she'd rather ask me questions from her desk across the room instead of getting off her butt and walking over to my desk. She even had the nerve to call me to get my attention. Don't get me started...

Well, it's 10 p.m. now and I'm just wrapping things up at the office. (Yes, I'm serious. A proposal had to get out tonight and there was no way I was going to miss the deadline.) So, that previous snippiness in the previous paragraph might have something to do with my being tired from a 16-hour day.

Hopefully I'll be able to write my next post this weekend. (I worked the previous two weekends, which is why it's been so long between posts.)  What can I say? It's all part of the joys of managing (and soon to be owning) a company. No rest for the weary...  %-)

What a week!!!

Yes, it was quite a week of misophonia experiences and new endeavors. I'll start from today and work my way backwards...

Right now I'm back in Vegas sitting at one of my prior regular coffee place hangouts waiting to meet with a former colleague. I only landed about an hour and a half ago and yet it feels like I never left here. As much as I'm enjoying the northwest, just driving from the airport to the coffee shop made me realize how much I like the environment out here.

The plane ride itself was pretty turbulent (it was the closest I've gotten to becoming air sick in a long time), but for me the worst was just as we were about to land, someone started whistling. I could even hear it through my earplugs and for the life of me, no matter where I looked around me, I couldn't see who was whistling. It was the weirdest thing, and not something I've had to deal with on a plane, but between the rough weather and the whistling trigger, I was not a happy camper as we landed. As we debarked and we

    About the Author

Emlyn Altman has been suffering with misophonia for over 35 years, even though she only found out about the actual medical condition much more recently. As frustrating as the condition has been over the years, her heightened sensitivities across all the senses considerably influenced her talents within the visual fine arts (particularly sculpture), music (singing, piano, and many other instruments), writing, and culinary backgrounds, as well as professional achievements as an architectural lighting designer. Her goal in developing this website is to promote more awareness about misophonia and help other sufferers as well.
