The "Butterfly's Whisper" Blog

Welcome to my blog. I hope by sharing my own misophonia experiences, others who are frustrated with misophonia sensitivities will discover that they're not alone. I also hope that people who may not have misophonia will gain some insight about what it's like to have this condition.

Please feel free to post any comments or use the "Contact Us" page if you have any questions/comments you don't want to post online.

Just a quick  adder to what I wrote last night, because I forgot I wanted to mention it... Yesterday afternoon I glanced down at my cell phone and noticed the alert icon that indicated I just received an incoming email through the "Contact Us" section of this website. When I tried to launch the message from the alert icon, somehow the message disappeared. I don't know if my cell phone is just acting wonky again (it's been alerting me to weeks/months old messages as if they were new ones for a while now), but if you did try sending me a message yesterday, please resend it... I do read all messages and try to respond to them as quickly as I can. The last thing I'd want to happen is to have someone send a message and think I was ignoring it. (I'm seriously considering getting a new smart phone, or at least "gravity testing" this one.)

I also wanted to let all you readers know that tonight I'll be heading out east again this evening to pay my respects to my parents' graves (a visit that's LONG overdue.) Of course, I'm bracing myself for the usual bombardment of triggers at the airport, and it will also be interesting to share my experiences with misophonia to family friends up there who may not understand what I've been going through. I also hope that returning to my birthplace may help me remember my younger years to better understand my past and if/how my misophonia may have played a role back then. Perhaps even speaking with my father's best friends could shed some light on whether he or my mother had any sensitivities too.

I'll do my best to post new blog entries as much as I can while traveling, but wanted to let you all know my plans over the next week in case I have limited internet access while up there.

Here is the silver lining: your body feels and looks better!
I don't know if excercise diminishes the disorder, but anything that reduces stress should help with lessening the hypervigilance and anxiety associated with disorder. Excercise, good diet, fish oil, mindfulness. They all contribute to happiness. Congratulations on the excercise regime!

Thank you. You're absolutely, 100% correct. I certainly don't want to minimize the overall benefits of having done that workout regime. It's one of the reasons why I signed up to continue their maintenence program for another year, and may even sign up to do the $10K challenge to keep me motivated with the frequency/intensity of my workouts - not that I need to do so. Just seeing the results after only 10 weeks, as well as how many friends and supporters I've made just by being in the class, have all made this effort worthwhile.

I still had some hope that perhaps getting my butt in gear and working out again might have had SOME affect in diminishing my sensitivities to triggers (based on what the doctor told me last year), but be that as it may... You're also right about the benefits of having an outlet like that to reduce stress (particularly misophonia trigger stresses that build-up throughout the day).

One of my most intense kickboxing sessions was the first day I was given the green light by my doctor to do upper-body workouts after the car accident. Of course, I did so within reason, and my coaches were keeping an eye on me too, but it felt SO good to punch and kick a 6' tall punching bag after my activity had been restricted for a whole week. It was such a wonderful rush to let all my frustrations out. I certainly do not want to minimize how good that felt.

Plus, as you also mentioned, this exercise program also helped me get my eating habits back on track too, something which I don't want to downplay either. My job is so stressful... Before I joined the program, I usually worked through lunch (meaning: skipped lunch altogether) and once in a while, I'd go the entire day without eating until dinner. I know, not healthy at all, but this workout program helped me there too.

Thank you again! I appreciate your positive feedback.

    About the Author

Emlyn Altman has been suffering with misophonia for over 40 years, even though she only found out about the actual medical condition much more recently. As frustrating as the condition has been over the years, her heightened sensitivities across all the senses considerably influenced her talents within the visual fine arts (particularly sculpture), music (singing, piano, and many other instruments), writing, and culinary backgrounds, as well as professional achievements as an architectural lighting designer. Her goal in developing this website is to promote more awareness about misophonia and help other sufferers as well.
